The Constitution of India is the supreme law of the country. It was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, and came into effect on January 26, 1950. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is known as the Father of the Indian Constitution. The Preamble declares India to be a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic. The Constitution originally had 395 Articles divided into 22 Parts and 8 Schedules. Today, it has 470 Articles and 12 Schedules. Fundamental Rights are guaranteed under Part III, while Directive Principles are mentioned in Part IV. The Constitution can be amended under Article 368.
